The Stupidest Thing I Have Ever Done
This is definitely the stupidest thing I have ever done because I could have been maimed or possibly died as a result.
When I was a kid, we lived within bicycle-riding range of the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area.
The dam was built to protect downstream homes and property from damage resulting from major storms.
We lived a block away from the L.A. river, which almost overran its banks several times before the dam and new river structure were built.
Below the dam is the beginning of the L.A. River, which is dry much of the summer.
One day, I had just finished some spillway bike dives and was looking for more excitement.
There was this pipe that crossed the river, and I decided to scoot myself across to the other side. I climbed over the wire fence and straddled the pipe. Then started across, kind of like an inchworm.
I got about five feet from the edge and realized that if I fell, I would either kill myself or at least break lots of bones because it was at least thirty to forty feet to the bottom.
I couldn’t turn around, so I had to make it across, a few inches at a time.
I finally got to the other side, then it took me about an hour to go around the back of the dam and get back to my bicycle.
Needless to say, I never tried that stunt again.
