A Daughter’s Question

A Daughter’s Question

Diane Disney Miller thought her dad was just “Dad” until she was about six years old.

That’s when a classmate of hers asked her, “Is your dad Walt Disney?”

Diane went home that day and waited for her dad to get home from work.

Eventually, Walt entered the large Disney home around dinner time and plopped down into his favorite chair.

Diane approached her dad a little differently than she always had that afternoon and she asked him, wide-eyed, “Are you Walt Disney?”

Walt, not understanding what his daughter was asking him, gave her a puzzled look and told her that, of course, he was Walt Disney because that was his name.

Diane asked her question again, “But…are you THE Walt Disney?!”

Walt smiled from ear to ear. “Yes, I am THE Walt Disney.”

In her book that she wrote with Pete Martin, “The Story of Walt Disney”, Diane said that she responded with a question her dad probably never thought he’d hear from his own daughter:

“Can I have your autograph?!”
