Reaction Time And The OODA Loop

How much time does it take for a police officer to respond to a threat?

A retired Chicago police detective demonstrates the OODA Loop, a four-stage decision making cycle plan designed used in a variety of professions–including law enforcement.

The stages of the OODA process take an officer 2.5- to 3-seconds to complete and include:

  1. Observe – See a potential threat
  2. Orient – Prepare to meet that threat
  3. Decide – Decide to engage the threat
  4. Act – Engage the threat
